How to choose the right garage door opener
Belt vs chain, horsepower, battery backup, phone control, here's how to pick an opener that fits your door and home.
Replacing an opener is a chance to make your garage quieter and smarter, but the options can be confusing. Here is how we help homeowners choose.
Drive type: belt vs chain vs jackshaft
Belt-drive openers are the quietest and our usual recommendation, especially for attached garages with living space nearby. Chain drives are cheaper but louder. Wall-mounted jackshaft openers mount beside the door instead of overhead, ideal for very heavy or high-lift doors and for freeing up ceiling space.
Horsepower: match it to the door
A standard single or double steel door is fine with a 1/2 to 3/4 HP opener. Heavier doors, like insulated double doors or full-view glass, need more power. Undersized openers wear out fast in the heat, so we size to the actual door weight.
Battery backup
Battery backup keeps the door working during a power outage, genuinely useful in Las Vegas, and required on new installs in many areas. We usually recommend it.
Phone control
Modern LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers include myQ, which lets you open, close, and check the door from your phone. If you have ever driven away wondering whether the door is open, this is worth it.
Our honest take
For most Las Vegas homes, a belt-drive LiftMaster with myQ and battery backup is the sweet spot, quiet, strong, and convenient. For unusually heavy doors, a jackshaft. We will recommend the right fit rather than the most expensive model.
